The Accountant

Part 1

I love adventure. Perhaps this is why, long ago, I began with business in the area of providing extraordinary experiences for the wide public and for people complaining about too boring life. If someone told me a week ago that today I would be grateful for my own life I probably wouldn’t believe it much.

...

It was getting dark outside. A short summer rain shower just stopped. I was sitting in my leather armchair sipping a mojito and enjoying a pleasant massage of my legs immersed in the luxurious massage device of the Philips mark. Black walked around me from time to time. I brought Black home in the last spring – it was a cat with completely black fur. Not a very interesting plot of a British psychological movie was playing in the TV in front of me. It was rather a sound background than anything else – I was tired and didn’t feel like attentive watching the TV. My mind wandered to various directions and I even caught myself several times that I nearly fell asleep. Simply, it was an evening I’ve experienced many times. However, the destiny decided this evening to be different.

It was quite innocent when it began. The ringing of the mobile lying on the table in the kitchen woke me up from snoozing. I ignored it. Nobody can disturb me during relaxing after an exhausting day. In addition, I had legs in a hot bath. However, the sound didn’t stop. After a while I realized a peculiar thing – the phone was still ringing and the voice mail wasn’t activated. I waited one minute more and then I decided to stand up and go to look who is calling at least. Anyway, I wanted to make another mojito. I turned the massage device off, slowly wiped my legs, stood up and started towards the still vibrating piece of electronics. I reached for it but when I touched it the ringing stopped. It’s odd, I thought. Never mind. Actually, it was better – I didn’t have to speak with anyone.

I mixed another mojito and went back towards the armchair. But when I did a few steps the telephone decided to tease me again. I turned around and went towards it. When I was walking I decided not to answer the phone call at any price. A surprising text was written on the display: "Hidden number".

I thought about who it could be. One of my ideas was a callcenter but it was nonsense – these callcenters call people during working hours and not in the evening. Perhaps it could be a collegue. I hadn’t many other ideas. I was so curious at that moment that in the end I decided to answer this call.
